Dear KAAPA members,
I am excited to
announce that KAAPA will host “Bootcamp for Textual Analysis using
Python 3” in January 2019.
Text analysis for empirical research is attracting greater attention
from accounting researchers, but only a small number of researchers are
using text analysis due to a high entry barrier. Therefore, KAAPA is
hosting this Bootcamp for many scholars who would
like to learn the basic text analysis.
1.
Date/Time: 9:00am - 11:00am,
January 18 and 25 (Friday), US Eastern Standard Time (i.e., 11:00pm,
January 18 and 25 - 1:00am, the next days, Korean time). We select this
time because our KAAPA members are working
not only in the U.S. but also in Asia and Europe.
2.
Format: Webinars using a Zoom platform. We used the Zoom meetings for a KAAPA webinar series successfully.
3.
Language: KOREAN. Most of
KAAPA members use Korean as the first language, so they will be able to
learn text analysis methods more efficiently in Korean.
4.
Instructor: Professor
Hyunkwon Cho. He obtained a Ph.D. degree from University of Houston in
2018 and is working at Sejong University in Korea. He has several
working papers that use advanced text analysis techniques,
some of which have been used by only a few accounting/finance
researchers. For example, his dissertation paper uses firm-level search records of the SEC
filings of industry peers.
5.
Purpose: This Bootcamp
intends to provide very basic knowledge about Python programming for
textual analysis. Participants can use such knowledge as a starting
point for developing their own programming skill. Note
that text analysis for empirical research requires a lot of time to
learn. Thus, this Bootcamp may not enable you to use text analysis in
your research immediately. Instead, this Bootcamp intends to lower the
entry barrier to the text analysis and help you
learn the new techniques with fewer trials and errors.
6.
Course contents: The first
session will cover the basics of Python programming for text analysis
and the second will discuss practical examples for text analysis. The
examples will include (1) downloading filings
from EDGAR, (2) cleaning EDGAR filings for text analysis, and (3)
constructing text-based measures such as keyword searches, readability,
and tone. Professor Cho will provide all the program codes, input data,
and instructions in advance. Participants will
be required to preview the materials in advance because the Bootcamp
will not cover all the details due to the limited time. We will post the
materials around one week before the Bootcamp and share them with
registrants.
7.
Registration: Only
registered participants will be able to join the Bootcamp and access the
Bootcamp materials. You can register the Bootcamp by filling in the
online form at https://goo.gl/forms/P549YB0ToF4yxZkp1.
The registration form requires a PayPal confirmation number for registration fee. See below the payment of registration fee.
8.
Registration fee (for the
2-day Bootcamp): The registration fee is $50 for regular members
(faculty) and $25 for associate members (Ph.D. students). The
registration fee is separate from the membership fee. You can
pay the registration fee by PayPal or credit card at the following
links.

Student registration fee $25: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=4P5JKP5TE7SPS&source=url
We
will send you another email when we share the Bootcamp materials with
registrants. If you have any question on the Bootcamp, please do not
hesitate to contact
me.
Best,
Jay Junghun Lee
